Position Overview

Mechanical design engineer will be responsible for carrying out mechanical design duties within the New Product Introduction (NPI) engineering department, including design, research, prototyping, engineering documentation, cost estimating, and process improvement via LEAN principles. Mechanical design engineers report to the NPI engineering manager and collaborate with R&D design, manufacturing, and purchasing teams on design projects.

Responsibilities

  • Duties include architecting, developing, and implementing mechanical design solutions supporting manufacturing of electro-optical subsea amplifiers, Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBGs), and fiber optic data transmission terminal equipment.
  • Mechanical design position involves technical problem solving, innovation through creative technical solutions, and clear communication of findings to team members.
  • Ability to create designs in both PTC Creo and SOLIDWORKS environments.
  • Research new materials and methods of development.
  • Organize and maintain new and existing engineering drawings.
  • Construct prototypes and confirm/defend designs through rigorous technical review.
  • Perform physical testing on design prototypes.
  • Ensure designs adhere to applicable industry and business standards.
  • Ability to drive complex problems to root cause; and, implement effective solutions which make both engineering and business sense are essential with this position.

  • This position requires excellent interpersonal communication skills for interfacing with internal and external organizations as required to perform job responsibilities.
  • BS in Mechanical Engineering required. MS preferred.
  • Expert knowledge of PTC Creo and SOLIDWORKS 3D CAD design environments.
  • Strong experience with geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (G,D&T).
  • Solid knowledge of mechanical design principles.
  • Experience with 3D printing/additive manufacturing technologies.
  • Knowledge of plastic and metal fabrication processes.
  • Ability to coordinate and interface with manufacturing suppliers, machine shops, etc.
  • Understanding of machine shop tool technology.
  • Experience converting 3D CAD drawings to 3D printed designs with various materials o Impeccable attention to detail.
    • Experience with electro-optical manufacturing processes.
  • Experience within design team environment.
    • Knowledge of Oracle based ERP systems in support of manufacturing processes.
